Shirodhara is a popular
therapy based in the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India. It has
been practiced for thousands of years to bring the mind, body and soul to a
harmonious level.
Shirodhara comes from the two Sanskrit words
“shiro” (head) and “dhara” (flow or pour). The therapy consists of pouring
medicated oil, decoctions, milk, buttermilk and other therapeutic liquids in a
continuous flow over the forehead, particularly between the eyes (on the third
eye). It is a
part of Panchakarma detoxification
process and is also a stand alone healing therapy for various
disorders related to the head, neck, ears, nose, throat and diseases of
the nervous system such as headache, insomnia, lack of concentration and
memory, fatigue and dizziness, among others. It helps to improve digestion,
speech and sensory organs, nourishes and rejuvenates the hair and helps maintain
the balance of body and mind.
